Corridor Peeking

OK this is the final one … for now!!! I’ve added some music to it as well felt it needed a little something extra to it.

Dan Stair Jump

Another one of our fabulous SFX test this time I added some corny sound effects. What I’m beginning to realise is that you can create something that looks really effective without having to use complex methods. The way I’ve created all of these is just by editing clips together at the right moments. Timing is integral to making the clips look effective.

FCP fun

In order to demonstrate SFX to us Andy made us venture out to the sunny realms of …. just outside Sainsburys!! Armed with a camera and a tripod we set about to get the footage of the year by attempting to recreate the age old SFX shot of someone walking behind a lamppost and another person emerging the other side. This one was probably the most effective of the lot we took. I can just picture with the right effects in After Effects or Cinema 4d this could be a pretty effective shot. When I get some time I’m going to attempt this and see what i can come up with.

Organic Nike

While doing some research on Youtube we came across this video which i absolutely loved. I think the main reason I loved it so much was because it was so different from every other transforming object video we had found. The almost organic look that the stop motion provided was a truly aesthetically pleasing effect. After seeing this we were considering the idea of going for a slightly more organic look to our transformation not quite to the extent of the stop motion but the idea of having the trainer peel away to reveal to something else is something we all find quite appealing.

wiiiiiiii

Obviously with the circle sketches I don’t just need to have floor pads to run the sketch but I also need a mouse. Seeing as I want to project my final sketch it is going to be very difficult for someone to use a mouse while stepping on floor pads. So I came up with the solution of using a wii remote to control the mouse movements meaning someone could just hold onto it while walking back and forth. I had never used a wii remote with my mac before and had great fun experimenting this afternoon. I needed to download a piece of software called Darwiin Remote you then pair the wii remote to your computer and your good to go.
One thing I did notice though is that with my processing sketches its quite slow to respond so you don’t get the full effect of the sketch I need to look into playing about with the settings to see if I can improve the response time.

Trainer Choice

Dan our resident trainer expert has been wracking his brain for a trainer that consists of distinct separations that we could use to transform. For the moment the trainer of choice is the Jordan Spizikes, in my opinion a rather ugly trainer but it has very obvious sections to it that would make animating easier.

Nike Transformer

We were quite pleased to find this on youtube as it was so similar to what we wanted to achieve and could prove to be quite a valuable reference point. The went for the classic transformer toy approach keeping the trainer a more mechanical object. Again the sound effects are a huge help in making this shot effective.

Transforming videos Part 1

We decided that seeing as this shot is only 30 seconds long our best research tool would be youtube to see if other people have attempted to achieve anything similar to what we want to create. At the moment we are looking at having the trainer transform like an old school transformer toy. The first video we came across was this one for Orange it was meant as a viral video to promote their new phone release. The beginning part of the video is a perfect example of some very good compositing. The spaceship fits into the scene incredibly well the shadow is at just the right density to make it believeable and the texturing on the model itself means that it doesn’t stand out in the scene too much. The transforming at the end is what we are most interested at the time though, the animation is very smooth and the whole transformation flows. In terms of the actual animation it seems very achievable and something that as a group I’m sure we have the skills to complete. What i think really adds to the whole video though are the sound effects they are perfectly timed with the movements making the scene more believable. We definitely have to keep sound effects in mind when creating our own shot.

SFX Group

After much deliberation I decided that the idea I liked the best and for me seemed the most interesting was the trainer idea. This idea was Dan’s so obviously we were now group buddies and also Karl joined as well. So we had our SFX group now we had to start thinking about what exactly it was we want to create and so on. Let the research commence!
